Digital nomad and remote worker visa
In force since April 2024, it lets you live in Italy while working remotely for foreign companies or clients. Main requirements:
- Highly qualified work (degree or documented experience).
- Annual income at least three times the minimum for healthcare co-payment exemption (around €28,000 a year).
- At least 6 months' experience working remotely.
- An ongoing contract or engagement, health insurance and accommodation.
The permit lasts up to one year, is renewable and allows family reunification.
Elective residence visa
Designed for retirees and people with passive income (pensions, rentals, investments) who want to live in Italy without working. Requirements:
- Stable, sufficient passive income; Consulates usually ask for more than €31,000 a year per person, and more for couples.
- Accommodation available in Italy (owned or long-term rental).
- Health insurance.
Taxes: a key point
Living in Italy for more than 183 days a year usually makes you an Italian tax resident. There are special regimes (for example for retirees moving to certain towns in southern Italy). We coordinate with tax advisers so there are no surprises.
Documents usually required
- Valid passport
- Remote work or client contracts (digital nomad)
- Proof of income for recent years
- Degree and CV (digital nomad)
- Rental contract or title deed in Italy
- Health insurance valid in Italy
The exact list depends on your case, your home country and the office (Questura, Consulate or Comune). We give you the final list in the consultation.
