Step by step
Check that you qualify
You can convert without a test if all three conditions apply:
- Your Argentine licence is valid.
- The issue date on the physical licence is before your residence in Italy.
- No more than 4 years have passed since you became resident in Italy.
Careful: if you renewed the licence in Argentina after moving, the new issue date may fall after your residence date and the consulate may refuse it.
Get the certificate of legality in Argentina
- National licence: request the certificate free and online from the Agencia Nacional de Seguridad Vial (ANSV); it is already legalised.
- Municipal licence: request it from the issuing municipality. If it has a handwritten signature and ink stamp, it must be legalised by the Argentine Ministry of the Interior or apostilled, or it will not be accepted.
Book at the Argentine consulate
Go to the consulate for your area of residence: Milan (Emilia-Romagna, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Liguria, Lombardy, Piedmont, Trentino-Alto Adige, Aosta Valley and Veneto) or Rome (check its jurisdiction on its website). Appointments are booked only through the Sistema Nacional de Turnos (SNT); new slots open daily.
Urgent appointments are only for justified cases: licence about to expire, the 4-year deadline approaching, medical or work reasons.

Attend with your documents
Bring originals and photocopies (full list in the checklist). The consulate issues the Consular certificate of validity and authenticity, the same day in Milan. Fee: €40, by card. The appointment is in person: agencies cannot do it for you.
Legalise the certificate at the Prefettura
The consular certificate must be legalised at the Prefettura of your province (Ufficio Legalizzazioni). Book directly with the Prefettura and ask whether a revenue stamp (marca da bollo) is needed.
Apply at the Motorizzazione
Submit the application at the Motorizzazione Civile in your province, by appointment, or through a driving school or ACI. You will need form TT2112, a medical certificate, photos and PagoPA payments (details in the checklist). The Motorizzazione keeps your Argentine licence.
Receive your Italian licence
The Italian licence arrives by post. Timing varies a lot between provinces, so start well before the one-year period in which you can drive on your Argentine licence runs out.

Document checklist
At the Argentine consulate
- Valid Argentine DNI (physical or in Mi Argentina) and photocopy
- Original valid Argentine licence, issued before your residence in Italy, and a colour copy of both sides
- Certificate of residence in Italy (Milan asks for the certificato storico di residenza; Rome for one issued within 30 days)
- Certificate of legality of the licence, legalised or apostilled if municipal
- In Rome: application form and a passport photo if your address changed
- Card to pay €40 (no Amex)
At the Motorizzazione
- Completed form TT2112
- Self-declaration with your current residence and the date and place of your first residence in Italy
- Consular certificate legalised by the Prefettura
- Original Argentine licence
- Medical certificate from an authorised doctor, with photo (with revenue stamp)
- Two recent passport photos (one is authenticated at the counter)
- PagoPA payments: fees (€10.20) and stamp duty (€32), indicative amounts as of October 2026
- ID document, codice fiscale and permesso di soggiorno (if you are not an EU citizen)
If you hold Italian citizenship
Italian-Argentine dual citizens can also convert their Argentine licence: what matters is residence in Italy, not nationality. You do not need a permesso di soggiorno; the Rome consulate also asks for a certificate of residence, your Italian ID card and passport.
If you do not qualify
If the licence has expired, was issued after your residence date or more than 4 years have passed, conversion under the agreement is not possible. You will need to get an Italian licence from scratch, with theory and practical tests, at the Motorizzazione or through a driving school.
Frequently asked questions
Can I drive in Italy with an Argentine licence?
As a tourist, yes, together with an official translation or an international driving permit. As a resident, only during your first year of residence; after that you need an Italian licence.
Does the ACA international permit replace the conversion?
No. It accompanies the Argentine licence for tourist driving, but cannot be converted and does not let you drive as a resident after the first year.
What if more than 4 years of residence have passed?
You cannot convert under the agreement. You need to get an Italian licence with theory and practical tests.
Can an agency do it for me?
The consulate step is personal and cannot be delegated. The Motorizzazione application can be submitted through a driving school or ACI.
How much does it cost in total?
Roughly: €40 at the consulate, the Prefettura legalisation, the medical certificate and about €42 in Motorizzazione payments. A driving school adds its own fee.
